Welcome to the start of the 2010 Babe Ruth Baseball season!

While practice won't commence until March, we're opening the registration window now so that your child can complete the registration process and help us gauge the number of players/teams we'll field this year.  Mail in registrations must be received no later than Saturday, March 6th, 2010.

We will field teams in two brackets:

1)    "Prep" teams for those 13 and 14 year olds making the move up from Little League to the High School/Major League-sized baseball diamond.  This team competes in the Fairfield Prep League against similar-aged and experienced players.  This will be a team of older 7th graders and younger 8th graders playing their first Spring on the bigger field . Eligible players:  Any player born before 5/1/97 and on or after 5/1/96.

2)    Teams composed of 14 and 15-year olds, comprised of players with at least one season of experience playing Babe Ruth on the larger field.  They also play in a Fairfield league with older, more experienced players.   This will be a team of older 8th graders, freshman, and sophomores not playing in the high school program.  We typically add another team at the conclusion of the high school season with a supplement draft to create even teams.  Eligible players:  Any player born before 5/1/96 and after 5/1/94.

Fees:

Fees cover the cost of uniforms, umpires, baseballs, insurance and team equipment.

Fees for the Full Spring Season (commencing in March and ending late June) are $275 per player.

Fees for the Regular Spring Season (starting when the High School Baseball season is over and ending late June - applies only to 14/15 year-old High School players who start after the end of the high school season) are $175 per player.

PLEASE NOTE:  If your son is planning on playing High School Baseball and then Babe Ruth for the remainder of the spring after the High School season is over (the Regular Spring Season) - please sign up for Babe Ruth NOW.  If your son ends up not playing High School Baseball he can play the Full Spring Season of Babe Ruth.

Mail in registrations must be received no later than Saturday, March 6th, 2010.

Comments:

Our objective in the spring season is to create an instructional league with competitive play, doing our best to "balance" teams in the same age bracket.

The league we play in requires all teams to do their best at making even teams - not an A team and B team - and they are good about policing that (a few years ago they asked another town to re-draft because they had one team that was winless and one team that was undefeated during the first part of the season).  Philosophically I agree with this.

We do not make any cuts - our goal is to create an instructional environment where we can field competitive teams and most of all help the kids get better at a game they love and help prepare them for High School baseball.

We are entering the stage in your child's Baseball career where some position specialization may start to occur.  Skills an outfielder works on - from throwing to situational awareness - are different than the skills a first basemen works on.  Usually by the end of the season each boy has a primary position that he plays regularly and a secondary position that he plays occasionally.  There are no rules dictating minimum number of innings a boy needs to play in the infield in Babe Ruth.

As a heads up, playing time throughout the season becomes more meritocrat as well.  All kids will get a chance to play in all games - but you may start to see things like on a team with 13 boys - 5 of them playing the whole game while 4 play the first half of the game and 4 play the second half.  The league plays with real baseball rules - including substitution rules - so you can not have kids playing every other inning like we could in Little League - and you have to sub into the same spot in the line up...

It has been my experience that when the kids (and parents) understand this up front its not an issue.  I'll be making sure that the coaches all know that communication is the key.

The Seasons Schedule has not yet been set by the league, but traditionally we have one game during the week, at least one game on the weekend, and two to three practices a week.

We would like all eligible kids who want to play to be able to play.  If the registration fees pose some difficulty please let me know privately and we will work something out.

I've sent this e-mail to all the families who have eligible boys who have played Babe Ruth in the past or who "graduated" from Little League last year.  Please feel free to forward this note to anyone you know who has an eligible child looking to play baseball this spring who I may have missed on the distribution list.

I'll send out another note with the schedule and timing details once they are set.  For first time Babe Ruth players we will also set up an "Evaluation Day" where the boys will have a practice and run through a series of drills that will help the coaches and the Board draft even teams.  Tentatively that will be Saturday March 6th.  We will confirm that date once the rest of the schedules have been set.

Finally, I'd like to thank Mike Antonovich for the great job he has done with Babe Ruth for the past few years.  He took the mantle from Henry Gilbertie, did a super job, and now has passed it to me.  Until I started doing Mike's job I didn't have the full appreciation of what he has done.  Thank you Mike.

Please copy, print out, and complete the information on the attached sheet to update our records and we look forward to another successful Babe Ruth baseball season!  Feel free to shoot me an email if you have any questions.

Thanks and have a great day,

Dan Hassett
